4 Tips To Promote Your Translation Services On Alibaba com (alibaba.com)
Many people know alibaba com as a website that gathers importers and exporters from over 240 countries in the world. Based in China, it has more than 45 million registered users. The English language based website is a front-runner in the business-to-business ecommerce realm.
You may also know that most of the suppliers listed on the website are from low labour cost countries such as China, India, Pakistan, Vietnam etc. A quick browse at some introduction pages of the listed suppliers, you will find that the use of English language on these pages is very poor.
As a matter of fact, at least 20-25% of the content, if not more, is hard for an English speaking person to understand. And often the representatives of these companies have very limited English communication ability to handle detailed requests and complaints and therefore can be of little help. As a result - and I’m not suggesting this is the only problem - some of these requests went unanswered or weren’t handled properly.
Having said that I believe alibaba com still is a convenient marketplace for many buyers and sellers out there. A huge amount of people are still visiting the website and conducting business there. OK, what I’m getting at is - this is a great opportunity for us translators.
If you are not already taking advantage of the free services of alibaba com, you should think again. Here are a few tips I want to share with you:
1- Register as a service provider
When you get on alibaba com, you want to go to the left column and scroll down to the bottom where it says “more categories”. Click on that and you will find “business services” session. You can list your service under the “translation services” session. It’s free to register. It would be ideal if you have a website or a blog. It makes you look official and legitimate.
Think about it - This is a large online community with millions of visitors all in the buying mood, you certainly want to have a presence.
2- Write a compelling introduction page for yourself
Once you have registered, you want to write a compelling message in your introduction. As a language service provider, you don’t have a photo to demonstrate service quality to your potential clients. Your introduction message is the only measurable piece of tool for them. Often it is also a strong proof of what you have to offer.
Don’t fall into the trap thinking that a low price will seal the deal. For a physical product, it may be true. But as an important service to facilitate business dealings, there’s a fair price attached. Don’t undersell yourself.
And do not consider getting clients as your only goal as a result of becoming a member of alibaba com. Your focus is to have as much presence as possible in a variety of websites – and this is one of them.
3- Search for service ideas
As a member you can take advantage of many free services available such as forum, questions and answers, news etc. Make sure you participate as often as your time allows.
Your active involvement not only helps establish your expert status in your language pair(s), but also gives you different perspectives and ideas in terms of what’s in demand and what’s needed in the market. You may tailor your service and create products to satisfy the market trends.
4- Contact companies
I’m not recommending that you contact any and every company listed on the alibaba com website. But after you’ve been a member for a while and have kept track of certain members’ online activities, you may have a clue as to who might need your service. You can contact them and make a business proposal.
Make sure you know plenty of background information about the company before you take this approach. Certain companies don’t respond well through emails or phones. So if you have the opportunity to ask for an in- person meeting, that would be much more productive. It all depends on how much effort you want to put in this.
