Outline Of A Resume That Works For Translators

Having a proper outline of a resume helps you write it properly when you are searching for dream translation jobs.

Here is resume tip #1 before more tips on writing a resume - you can find great sample resume online for reference, but do not copy or imitate!

>

Imitation may be the greatest form of flattery, but you want your first impression to be unique.

Your resume should be a one-of-a-kind marketing tool for yourself.

It should help you stand out from a crowd and get that interview.

Here’s a common outline of a resume or a resume outline example:

The heading

This section should contain your basic contact information, so the employer knows how to reach you.

YOUR NAME

YOUR ADDRESS

PHONE NUMBER

EMAIL ADDRESS

Job objective

This section is important. It sends a message to the reader that you have a clear career direction or know where you are going and establishes a positive impression.

Summary of qualifications

This part of the resume consists of several concise statements that focus the reader’s attention on the most important qualifications and abilities you have to offer.

These qualities are the most compelling reasons why an employer should hire you and should be attributes that will match the employer’s needs.

So try to use short phrases and positive action words. Try to be convincing and strong. Be confident but not brash!

Achievements

In this section you will market yourself through the results you’ve achieved. Let your past successes establish confidence in your skills, and show the prospective employer how that experience relates to their needs.

Education

Here you will list your education background such as post-secondary, university degree, major, honours, awards, career upgrade courses etc.

If your complete list is too long, just pick the ones most recent and relevant to the job you are applying for.

Employment history

List your previous employment history in this section. The most common way is to list the most recent job first on your resume. Other jobs can follow in a chronological order.

Again, keep it relevant to the position and skills you are highlighting.

You can also list any relevant volunteer activities if they contribute to your work experience in this translation field.

For freelancers, you can list any clubs, groups or organizations you belong to. List in what capacity you have used your freelancing skills.

References

This section is optional. It is too early for employers to check out any reference at this stage and it is often OK to note references will be available upon request.

You can also use this sample outline of a resume for your freelance work:

Your name and title (such as certified court interpreter)

The job you are applying for

What I do: (description)

Projects I’ve worked on:

(List of projects)

My clients:

(list of your clients and testimonials if you have)

Awards:

Rates

(optional)

You can reach me at:

(company name)

(address)

(phone number)

(e-mail address)

A few extra tips

  • Provide a few clips of your translation work. Select clips that are similar to the work you would be doing for this potential client/employer
  • Ask clients and past employers to write letters of recommendation for you and provide copies with your resume.
