Networking for Dummies - Dos and Donts for Translators

Let's just call it networking for dummies as an introduction of networking.

It's great to some business networking sites or join business networking groups. But never stop there! You need to network anywhere and anytime.

Here’s a list of networking tips - dos and donts for translators who want to reach out to more potential clients.

#1.Do learn what to say

Not everyone is born to be a natural socialite. You need to practice to be good at it. It’s common for people to feel nervous or uncomfortable in any unfamiliar surroundings.

Asking the right questions will not only get people talking, but also will make yourself unforgettable.

Questions like these can be great starters:

  • How did you become so successful in doing…?
  • How did you get started…?
  • Where else do you network besides here?
  • What do you do when you are not working?

What’s more, when you ask these questions, you’ll most likely be asked the same questions in return. Then you'll get the chance to talk about yourself.

Practice until you can say them naturally and smoothly. Knowing what to say is the first step in networking for dummies.

#2.Keep it nice and easy, no pressure first.

Casual groups such as ToastMasters are open to everyone, but there are plenty of entrepreneurs, executives and business decision makers attending.

The good thing about it is that most of these people attend other social or volunteer groups. You’ll soon learn the different groups that are a good fit for marketing your translation business and where to find your potential clients.

#3.Do ask for help.

Another rule in networking for dummies is asking for help. Everybody started where you are. You don’t have to be a pro from the get-go.

When you attend events or gatherings, you’ll always find some people that seem to know everyone and everything. Try to connect with them. Ask them for help. You’ll be surprised at how much people are willing to help you out.

Try as many groups as possible and then become a regular visitor to the ones that fit well and feel a connection with. Nobody can tell you which ones are better than others, you have to feel it and measure it yourself.

#4.Do not overlook online networking opportunities.

With an ever growing online population and a new wave of social media sources, you can’t underestimate the potential benefits of networking online. Whether you like it or not, more and more people are using social media sites. If you’re not plugged in, your competitor is.

So when it comes to networking for dummies, it’s extremely important to join the online community. Be there and be active.

#5.Do keep a professional appearance and outlook.

People form an impression of you within the first 30 seconds after they meet you – whether it’s in person or online/over the telephone. You’ve only got one last chance to make the first impression.

So keep a business attitude at all times. Keep your voice soft and firm. Use a warm and positive tone.
