How To Make Money Providing Korean Translation Online
QUESTION:Hi Joy,I’m hoping to make some money by providing Korean translation online. Can you recommend a language translation website where I can sell my freelance English Korean translation service? Are English to Korean translation service and Korean to English translation service in demand? What do I do to maximize my income with my bilingual skills? Leah Song from Canada ________________________________________ ANSWER:Dear Leah, Thanks for the question. It seems more and more people are looking for opportunities to make money online these days. In this information overflowing age, it’s increasingly hard for people to make money simply by trading your time for money. Your education background, your knowledge alone can no longer guarantee a secure income. You have to learn how to sell, whether you do it online or offline. Having said that I believe the demand for Korean translation online as well as other major Asian language translations is solid. Whether it’s for legal, medical documents or websites or entertainment projects, there’s no shortage of clients looking for qualified translators. Here are a few ideas for your job search online: 1- Freelance websites such as translatorscafe.com, proz.com and translatorsbase.com Many of these websites have been there for quite some time. They have a solid client base that regularly seek freelance translators to complete their projects. If you have enough exposure, you’ll likely land some freelance jobs. Keep in mind though, these websites often charge you a fee to be able to bid for a job. You have to decide if the membership fee (usually from a couple hundred dollars a year or more) is really worth it. Don’t expect to get any high-paying work from these sources. There are plenty of translators out there who are willing to undersell themselves. It’s sad, but it’s the reality. 2- Offer your service at Micro job sites Another place where you can offer your Korean translation online is at micro job sites such as fiverr.com. Clients pay 5 dollars for any service offered at the site. Let’s be honest – you are not going to make a lot of money that way unless each job takes you only minutes to complete or you have something repeatable to sell. For example it wouldn’t be a bad idea if you can come up with an ebook of Korean phrases with English translations etc. provided there’s enough demand for your book. You’ll have to do the research and find the market if that’s something you want to look into further. 3- contact businesses online who are already targeting your potential clients A better way to market your Korean translation online is to find businesses that are already targeting your potential clients. I find the best way to promote your service is not to label it as a simple translation service. Instead you have to convince these businesses that you can help to expand their client base with your bilingual skills. I’m always hesitant when I use the word “translator” to describe my profession. It drastically limits the potential benefits I can provide to potential clients out there. Unfortunately to many people, a translator means someone who happens to speak two languages. That simple assumption makes some businesses believe that we need them more than they need us. Instead I like to describe myself as someone in the language business. I’m also a communication consultant specialized in language translation. 4- Develop your own business idea The moment you decide to provide Korean translation online, you are facing tons of competitors. Some of these people have an impressive education background with an enormous amount of experience. I’m not trying to scare you, but merely putting the facts in front of you. You need to be prepared to stand out from the crowd. The best way to stand out is to develop your own business idea. And the best way to find these ideas is by talking to your target audience – your potential clients. The internet has changed so much in the past ten years that the things other people did to succeed 10 years ago will not work today. Who would have thought that social media is outperforming Google today when it comes to finding information online? My point is - you have to be ready to adapt to changes if you want to make money online. Providing Korean translation online will not likely bring you enough income to quit your day job. There’re lots of potentials in the Asian market. You just have to explore… Hope this helps, Joy Translators-Biz-Secret.com _________________________________________ Want more tips to attract quality translation jobs and high-paying clients?
