How to Find High Paying Jobs for Translators through Volunteer Networking

Do you know that many good paying jobs for translators can be unearthed through volunteering experience?

When you volunteer for an organization which serves your target market or where you meet with other professionals who are already targeting your potential clients, you can hit a jackpot.

It's ok to look for jobs online and apply for jobs online. But real online jobs are given to people who are well connected and well informed.

By now you probably already know the importance of networking for a job seeker. Volunteering is one of the best ways to network because people are more receptive and interested in sharing experiences. It’s also easier to establish trust and credibility.

As a freelancer who works on deadlines regularly, you understand the value of smart time management. You’ve also likely experienced how helping others can have altruistic rewards. Volunteering can also lead to jobs for translators if you have the right approach and know where to go.

Here are a few places I would strongly recommend:

1.Are you a legal translator? Why not volunteer for your local pro bono law society.

You get to meet lawyers, court reporters, paralegals and a whole bunch of other non-lawyer legal professionals. You can build your contact list easily with a shared common cause.

Friendships and self-worth can grow from giving your time and skills. You also get to showcase your abilities. Through these connections, you may find jobs and/or referrals follow.

2.Do you volunteer for a political party?

I understand that some translators want to stay away from politics, as you don’t want to be seen as partisan and pidgeon-hole your opportunties.

But there are quality jobs for translators given out to political party insiders on a regular basis. Because of the nature of politics, parties naturally want to give contract work to their supporters.

Don’t assume you have to help the party in government. There tends to be more competition for government jobs and therefore your chance to get those jobs may be limited. Opposition parties or smaller parties have fewer volunteers, but that also means jobs for translators are considered among a shorter list of competitors.

Of course you should feel comfortable with whichever party or organization you volunteer with.

3.Volunteer for a political candidate.

An election campaign can be an exciting place to practice your language skills. Depending on the organization(s) that your chosen candidate works with, you may get different opportunities through his or her contacts.

While it can involve long or late hours, the world of politics is very much a personal and human exercise, so you will meet a lot of people from a variety of backgrounds.

4.Offer your skills at your local church or non-profit organization.

Whether it involves using your language set to assist people in need, or just helping out with a specific project, you will meet people from all walks of life.

While keep your eyes open for job leads, also take the time to see how fortunate we are, and share your positive experiences. If you enjoy helping others, your good deeds will be rewarded.

No doubt, there are more volunteer opportunities that can lead to great jobs and opportunities for translators.

Why? Because when you share a common interest or great cause with someone else, it’s easier to build the mutual trust. And when you feel good about yourself and your efforts, others will notice, too.
