I’m just not happy to be another freelance translator.

I remember my mother used to say this all the time,

“wasting time is a crime!”

I never truly began to understand and appreciate the essence of the claim until I started to have my own life experience.

It is also one of the free inspirational quotes that I often share with my friends and family.

How often have you decided to start something totally exciting only to say to yourself later, “ I’ll put it off until I have more time on hands.” Well, guess what? You will never have time if you don’t make time.

Over the years what I’ve learned is that you will never have time to do all the things you want to do in your life. You have to make choices. You have to make decisions. And sometimes it’s tough.

Have I made wrong choices and bad decisions? You bet. I regret about many things. I failed many times. Miserably! But I never regret trying. I’ve learnt a lot from all those years of experience. For one thing that is – don’t quit your day job until you don’t have time to sleep.

As Mark Twain once said – this is also one of my favorite free inspirational quotes:

“20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Since I started my blog/website, I’ve received lots of emails from my wonderful visitors such as yourself. By the way, keep it coming! I love to hear from you. There are many legitimate questions from your letters:

“Will these strategies work for me?”

“Will I get enough clients?”

“Is it the right service for me to provide?”

“what if everyone starts to do the same thing, I’ll have no way to stand out from my competitors?”

The list goes on and on…

The truth is you’ll never know what works and what doesn’t in business if you don’t test and experience it yourself. Unfortunately most people who get excited about a new idea or strategy take no actions. They are either too afraid to make that step or having a habit of procrastination.

The result? Time flies by and nothing is changed.

The business world is changing by the day. The international financial crisis, the abysmal job market and the development of new technologies should all serve as a reminder that maintaining your status quo is a dangerous practice in business.

When you are not going ahead, you’ll most likely get left behind.

Translation is a traditional industry that’s going through quite some changes due to the development of translation tools and the fact that the internet has made outsourcing so much easier for clients.

To say that translators have been affected by these changes is an understatement. But instead of feeling sorry for ourselves and complaining about it, we all need to adapt to the changes. The good thing about being self-employed is that you can make changes without huge costs.

More and more big companies and corporations are downsizing. And they are also outsourcing more of their tasks to smaller contractors and freelancers. This is your chance! But you can’t cash on these opportunities if you don’t act and play.
