How To Market English Hindi Translation Service To Global Market

QUESTION:I speak both English and Hindi and I’m a competent English Hindi translation service provider. I’m currently working as a coordinator at a manufacturing facility.

My long term goal is to become a translator or interpreter and ultimately own my business.

>

But I also understand that my language combination of English and Hindi alone may not have the kind of demand to sustain a good profit consistently.

I read your blog regularly and really like some of the tips you have shared with us. I’m really hoping that you could provide me with some advice on the languages that have great demand.

Also what are the best ways to market my English Hindi translation service to the global market? Your reply would be greatly appreciated.

Dandak India

ANSWER:Dear Dandak,

Thanks for writing to me. Like yourself I also feel that setting a long term goal is absolutely necessary to keep myself motivated and work hard. It’s great that you are capable of providing English Hindi translation service.

Since Hindi is one of the official languages used in India I would assume that there’s a decent demand for English Hindi translation in your home country.

You’ve asked a couple questions. Let’s look at them one by one.

1- Which languages are in great demand?

The general trend is that most Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean are in huge demand. This is largely due to the economic shift from the west to the east these days.

More and more economic and financial activities are carried out in countries such as China, Japan, India etc. Qualified language professionals majoring in these languages are always being sought after.

Other major languages such as Spanish, French and German also continue to be popular. It’s true that most in-demand languages tend to generate more freelance work for translators.

But one thing I want to point out is that when the demand is high, the supply is often high too. There’s always plenty of competition out there if you happen to be a language professional in the above mentioned languages.

There may not be a huge demand for English Hindi translation services globally, but the supply is also relatively low. The most sought-after translator positions in China are often in rare languages such as Laotian, Italian, Portuguese etc.

So unless you are going to accept work exclusively from online sources, you don’t have to always go after the most popular languages.

Don’t forget to take other factors into consideration.

How much time do you have to acquire a new language?

What are the resources available for you?

How much money do you have to spend?

What is the market demand for a particular language in your home country?

What’s the typical pay for a translator position in your chosen language pair?

After you’ve found all the answers to the above questions, you’ll get a clear picture of your options.

2- The best ways to market your English Hindi translation service

There are many ways to market your service. You can visit freelance websites such as guru.com and translatorscafe.com. You may have to take a membership to be able to bid for jobs. It’s your call.

You have to decide if the outcome justifies the investment.

I personally don’t encourage translators to rely too much on these online freelance jobs, but if you are just starting out desperate for clients or short on cash, you might want to go there. Once you are more established you can modify your directions.

You can also start a blog or a website to market your service to a target market. This is often easier said than done. But if you don’t get started you’ll never get there.

and low or no cost marketing strategies for translators.

Remember the key is not to emphasise the value you can provide to your potential clients. You need to find a unique way to capture your own market.

Following what other translators are doing is not enough. Once you find your own voice, your marketing will become a lot easier.

Ultimately you want to make a good living with your language skills. That’s why you should never lose the sight of creating and maintaining a profitable business. Once you keep that in mind, other things will fall into places naturally.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Joy
