How To Create A Social Network That Gives You Repeated Referrals
It’s to create a social network for your business. People often say that it’s not what you know, but rather who you know. Not everyone likes networking events. You may be uncomfortable talking to people you hardly know or feel awkward talking about yourself and your business. But don't be too quick to dismiss the importance of networking. The key is how to network effectively. The following 10 steps will help you get repeated referrals. 1.Come up with a list of groups who may be already targeting your potential clients. Say you are a business translator - you may want to create a social network by starting a list that includes copywriters, accountants, web designers, consultants, desktop publishers etc. - the more the merrier. Why these people? Because they are already targeting your potential clients. 2.Do a search on the internet or check your local business listings at chamber of commerce or yellow pages. Find out 10 names for each category on your list. Also pay attention to your local newspapers (including the business section!) and skim through to see if anyone in these occupations come up in the news. Who does the newspaper turn to for its expert quote? You want to get those well known names. 3.Check to see if any of your family members and friends are already in these occupations If so, great, ask them to introduce you to the key people they know. 4.If there is no direct connection, expand your search. Seek out people who have those connections you seek – whether it is the office secretary, the newspaper’s business writer, or someone on the local Chamber of Commerce board. If you meet them and make a positive impression, it can grow from there. There’ll be opportunities coming up. You just need to keep focused and pay attention to what’s going on. 5.Always approach a person you don’t know with a go-between, someone who they know. That way, it feels natural for both parties. Plus at times, the go-between person can be there to support you when you feel awkward. When you try to create a social network from scratch, having a support system around you is essential. 6.Ask for advice. One of the most effective networking tips is - Don’t ask for referrals directly. You need to build up the connection first. Listen carefully and ask questions. The best way to get them on board is to ask them for advice. 7.Always follow up after you get acquainted with these people. It’s recommended that after the initial follow-up, you need to stay in touch with these people at least once every 3 months. A phone call or an appointment for coffee usually is adequate for this purpose. 8.Keep nurturing this relationship you've just built. When you get to know them better, they’ll help you add contacts to your list. Someone who feels an honest connection is more than likely to act in your best interest. 9.If you give, chances are you’ll get in return. Try to refer business to them if you can. People are more likely to return your favour by giving you referrals. Start to create a social network with the intention to be helpful to others as well. 10.You can even offer combined deals to same target groups. Of course this has to be agreed upon and pre-arranged. Cross promotion or joint venture will both reduce your costs and make a unique impact with potential clients.
