Where Are The Arabic Translator Jobs?

How do you find quality Arabic translator jobs?

Here's a question I received from my reader.

Question: Hi Joy,

I am a medical person, bilingual (Arabic and English) and in addition to all that I am a single mom and was thinking of getting a phone interpreter job but with all the stress I have, I am very confused about how to get started.

I have sent my applications to many companies. But I’ve never heard anything back from them. I have some questions and I really hope you have the answers.

Thanks and Regards

Dina from U.S.

Answer: Hi Dina, thanks for contacting me and I'm really humbled by your trust. I will try my best. First of all, there are always quality Arabic translator jobs around.

Now when you say you are a "medical person", what exactly do you mean? Do you have any contacts at hospitals and doctors' offices? Maybe ask them if they have any information regarding Arabic to English translation job opportunitie.

Regarding telephone interpreting jobs, as far as I know, Arabic is a language in huge demand. But US telephone interpreting companies have the tendency to contract out their work to lower labor cost countries. So there aren't many jobs around as we would like to see. Also most of these available Arabic translator jobs are not so well paid.

Also, how much do you know the Arabic community? Do you join their forums or talk to these people regularly? Have you thought about other types of Arabic translator jobs such as writing a booklet for Arabic speaking patients - "terms and phrases you need to know when you talk to your doctor"?

Since you've got medical background, it wouldn't be too difficult to come up with a little tip book. Don't try to cover everything. You are not a dictionary. Small/handy is more attractive. Make sure plenty of research is done before you get started, so that your final product will attracts buyers – not what you think the buyers want, but rather what they want.

Once it's ready, you can sell it on ebay or some popular Arabic community websites or even on your own website. Just an idea for you to explore. Let me know if you have more questions.

good luck,

Joy

Dina: Hi Joy, thanks a lot for your helpful and prompt reply. It gave me a better vision of things. So if u don’t mind I have few more questions. Firstly I would like to know if it’s possible that I set up my own call center to do freelance interpretation. If it’s possible what are the procedures I would need? Like what kind of phones would I need to have a three way conversation? How do I become known to people? And also how do I get paid?

I am an Egyptian physical Therapist , so yes I deal with the Arab community a lot and I do have some associates in the medical field. After reading your email I thought maybe I can offer over-the-phone interpretation if they get any Arab patients, but I’m not sure if it would really work.

Many companies I contacted all say that they don’t have Arabic translator jobs available at the moment so I am not sure if it’s because there are so many Arabic translators/interpreters out there or its the economy going down the slope? Secondly , since I have gained most of my translation experience in Egypt I don’t really know how things go in the US so here comes my question, How can I gain the needed experience , and if I need to train myself how should I proceed?

The idea of making a tip book is very nice, I like it so much and I will soon start working on it. Finally I would like to thank you again, I am really grateful for you help.

Regards to you and your family

Dina

Joy: Hi Dina, I suppose you could set up your own telephone interpretation service, but I wouldn't recommend you do so since you haven't worked in this field and know very little about the industry.

There might be a great need for your service, but to compete with tons of established companies is very risky unless you've done your research and come up with something unique and different to your target market. But it takes time and effort.

That's why you need to get out there. Get involved in the community. If you are totally new to this, I would recommend that you write a business introduction letter to all your contacts. Volunteer your expertise in the community. Talk to your family and friends and ask them for advice and referrals. Keep your communication going. As for getting updated training for Arabic translator jobs, you should always start with local colleges and universities.

Hope this helps,

Joy
